James C. Christensen was born and raised in Culver City, California. He grew up very close to the MGM studio and has said that he would often play on the sets for big movies that were being produced there. James had a very active imagination which heavily influenced his artistic style and subject matter.
James studied painting at UCLA and Brigham Young University where he received his M.A. After completing his education James worked as a freelance illustrator and painted in his spare time. Additionally, James worked for Brigham Young University’s art department for 20 years. He also traveled frequently to Europe and Mexico to gain inspiration for his works. James has won many awards from the World Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention and the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists.
James C. Christensen’s works are extremely unique. He specialized in science fiction and fantasy art and did work for large media companies. While he drew inspiration from real life he also took a lot of ideas from his own head. James’ trademarks, although not seen in all of his paintings, are floating or flying fish, hunch-backs, and people wearing several layers of Renaissance-era clothing. In addition to painting, James was also an accomplished sculptor. Many of his sculptures were inspired by his paintings and placed in his personal residence. James passed away in January of 2017.
